What a delight to discover that this big sister was the perfect hand-holding height to help her baby sister who was learning to walk. We took advantage of it throughout the photo session, as the sun went down in London. We even got Mum and Dad to hop in for a few. Gunnersbury Park made a gorgeous background with its two mansions and path of ruins. Ideal for two sisters to explore!
It’s so fun to find colorful and unusual backdrops for a family session because then we can really concentrate on candid moments in the space. Even the shiest little ones come out of their shell when we take the focus off photography and enjoy where we are.
Shooting crisp, vibrant digital photos for clients day in and day out sometimes makes me crave a more raw, dark, vibe-y feel. I like watching indie films and listening to indie music, finding inspiration in the sense of being on the edge of something, admiring the unpolished and the perfectly flawed.
Whenever I travel, I take some plastic cameras along with experimental films like the Lomo Redscale film stock I used in my Holga in this series of photos in Europe over the course of the past several months. These images are a pretty stark contrast to the bright family portraits I’ve been taking in California lately. Their moodiness reflects some of that indie feel I admire in other mediums.
Delight your clients with mini photo sessions for kids and families. Book a photo event to create buzz in your community, enhance the in-person retail experience in your space, and give your clients exclusive access to one-of-kind portraits.

I discovered Zeena Shah’s work online, in her shop Heart Zeena, when I was looking for whimsical packing tape (oh, the delights and oddities of running a children’s photography business!), and quickly fell in love with her aesthetic. She designs and prints gorgeous, charming things like wrapping paper and throw pillows (“cushions,” as they say in the UK). After taking her printmaking workshop, I met up with Zeena for meringues in London, and she talked to me a little bit about how she launched her business.
Nic Wassell of Strange Day Films produced this video interview of me, giving a flavor of my style. Shot on location while I was in London, even the setting gives the sense of adventure I use to maintain my creative spirit. Hope you enjoy!
It was really sad to leave London after a month. Just like it was sad to leave Portugal after 5 days. I think it’s endings in general that are sad. Like a good film by Almodovár (do you know his work?), I just want it to keep going and going.
