Holiday Prep 2011

The images shown here are a few of my favorite shots from my latest NYC trip, capturing expressive moments for my clients to share with their families and friends.  Having themselves captured on camera, they can share their sweet faces with everyone who cares about them, near and far, on their yearly holiday cards.  I’m enamoured with this tradition. I’ve set aside a special place in my home to showcase photo cards, as they start rolling in.

This year, I’m offering a unique, new product.  It’s a flat metal ornament featuring the photo of your choice.  I have to say, I believe this might very well be the perfect grandparent gift!  Price is $35.00.  Email rsvp@sarahsloboda.com to start customizing yours.

And, it’s not too late to book a session this year.  I’ll do my best to accommodate all I can before the holidays.  Email rsvp@sarahsloboda.com for availability.

New York City Family Shoots – Fall 2011

One of the highlights of my job is that I sometimes get to bear witness to parents coming up with brilliant ideas for photos — like sticking an infant into a pumpkin for Halloween.  I had tears in my eyes, we were laughing so hard when this photo was created (it was a team effort getting him in there, to be sure!).  I even lit him like a jack-o-lantern.

This was actually the very last shot from my whirlwind October trip to NYC: Queens, DUMBO, Central Park, Tribeca, Nolita, and then some!  I photographed families and kids all over town, and was fully booked for the 3 days I was there.  If you didn’t get a session and would like one before the holidays, never fear, I’ve added 2 more NYC dates this fall: November 19th & 20th.

Email bookings for availability.

Water Photos

This August, I photographed kids keeping cool by splashing in nice, cold water.  Water is incredibly fun to photograph.  On a slow shutter speed, its motion is recorded, becoming a unique element to the photo in and of itself.  On a fast shutter speed, water is frozen in time, showing its nature in ways we don’t get to see with the naked eye.

As we start to pile on the layers this fall, I thought this would be a pleasant reminder that everything has its season.  Before we know it, summer will come around again, and we’ll be splashing away.

New York Captured with a Brownie Camera

My friend Scott at Aperture sold me a little brownie camera this summer.  I believe the camera is a 1950s model, and it is incredibly simple.  Kodak first released a version of the Brownie in 1900, and that camera and it successors are what made the homemade snapshot a possibility for the masses.  Kodak’s slogan back then was, “You press the button, we do the rest.”

NYC Families

This summer, I got to work with some wonderful families, shooting on location all around New York City.  From Brooklyn to Tribeca, and all the way up to the Conservatory Gardens in Central Park (and many places in between!), these photos showcase some of the fun adventures I had the chance to capture with young New Yorkers and their parents.

The image collection below also features various capture techniques and effects including film and digital; 35mm and medium formats; color, black & white and redscale; SLRs, DSLRs and even plastic cameras.  If there is a particular style of image here that you like, simply mention it, and I can emulate it for your session.

I’ll be doing family sessions in New York again soon, Oct. 21-23, 2011.  It’s a fantastic time to take advantage of the fall weather, and get your holiday card portraits ready.  Email rsvp@sarahsloboda.com to book.

Thank You, New York

It’s been 9.5 years since I relocated to New York City.  I’ve had amazing opportunities to work with gifted people on films, film festivals, photo shoots, advertisements, and TV shows.  I’ve collaborated with amazing artists, actors, actresses, and musicians.  I’ve had the honor of photographing dozens and dozens of couples and families.  It’s been quite a journey from exploring all that New York had to offer me in the entertainment industry, to launching my business as a wedding photographer, to transitioning to a thriving family, baby, and child photography specialty.

I have been literally bombarded with inspiration here, from my peers, from my competitors, from my mentors.  I am bursting with new ideas, including new mediums, new ways of expression, new services to offer my clients, and new services that will serve the needs of new clients.
