Paris all decked out with Christmas lights is a sight to behold. I walked the Champs-Élysées with this family and snapped some shots of them in the midst of all the bustle. The lights in Paris during the holidays are enough to brighten even the darkest winter spirits. Not to mention the vin chaud available at every Christmas market!
What a delight to discover that this big sister was the perfect hand-holding height to help her baby sister who was learning to walk. We took advantage of it throughout the photo session, as the sun went down in London. We even got Mum and Dad to hop in for a few. Gunnersbury Park made a gorgeous background with its two mansions and path of ruins. Ideal for two sisters to explore!
What a glorious day we had in Paris for this family session! Working with toddlers is always interesting – it’s better to engage them in play than try to get them what you want them to do. All the more reason to select an incredible location so that wherever they roam, you’ll have great backdrops.
Shooting crisp, vibrant digital photos for clients day in and day out sometimes makes me crave a more raw, dark, vibe-y feel. I like watching indie films and listening to indie music, finding inspiration in the sense of being on the edge of something, admiring the unpolished and the perfectly flawed.
Whenever I travel, I take some plastic cameras along with experimental films like the Lomo Redscale film stock I used in my Holga in this series of photos in Europe over the course of the past several months. These images are a pretty stark contrast to the bright family portraits I’ve been taking in California lately. Their moodiness reflects some of that indie feel I admire in other mediums.
Kirsten Alana is one of those rare talents whose wanderlust informed and enhanced her creative career as she took on the world of travel photography and writing. In other words, her personal life and her creative life are inextricably entwined. Kirsten’s definitely one of my favorite people to follow on Instagram, and Paste Magazine added her to their list of 30 photographers to follow, as well. Whether you’re looking for travel or creative inspiration, KA is your woman. I’m honored to have had the chance to profile her.
(Above is an old iPhone — we’re talking 2 models ago — pic I took of Kirsten Alana the first time we met in person, in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, 2010.)

Hello, there! What’s inspiring you today? I’m beyond excited about my upcoming travels, and finding it really difficult to concentrate as I book my arrangements. Where am I going? Why, I’m delighted you asked…
You’ve probably noticed that lately my blog has mixed photos shot for clients with photos taken throughout my day-to-day traveling and what-not. I’ve tried keeping the two separate for awhile, but in truth, each informs the other. To just include one is always only telling half the story. What in the world is my story, anyway?
At the end of July, Instagram reported an astonishing 80 million users. This is incredible given that just two years ago, it listed only 100,000 IGers. Are you one of the millions that has recently tapped into the fun of instantly logging photos of your life’s experiences? (If so, follow me! I’m @sarahsloboda.)
