For my third shoot in Ann Arbor, we started inside with some magnificent window light. I adore how sweet the kids looked in this gorgeous wrap-py light. Afterwards, we ventured outside for some shots on the lawn. Continue reading “Ann Arbor, Michigan – Family Photos, No. 3”

Ann Arbor Michigan — Family Photos, No. 2
Continuing my shooting time at the Law Quad, I photographed a second family. I just love the archways and the stone work of the architecture here; it lends a classic feel to the modern family photo shoot. My favorites from this set are the series of mom and son snuggling, and of dad tossing his little girl in the air. So much love!

Ann Arbor, Michigan – Family Photos, No. 1
This summer, I traveled to Ann Arbor, hometown of my alma mater, University of Michigan, for several family photo sessions. In the spirit of editorial-style photography, I wanted to capture a modern look and feel for these families, using settings that showcase the city in its super-green summer state.

Medina County, Ohio – Family Farm Shoot
A dear friend of mine invited me to document her kids on location at their horse farm in Medina County, Ohio. I love the hats she provided — just when I thought her kids couldn’t get any cuter! It was fun to watch and record the kids explore and play. It’s always intriguing to observe the interaction between siblings, to see how they share and how they feed off each other’s energy. And, what an amazing setting for a shoot! The kids kept me busy exploring the grounds, and it was awesome that they could play freely.

NO. 2 – PUBLIC, NYC
panel commentary
architect The design for Public was partially inspired by buildings of the FDR-era Works Progress Administration, constructions which tended to have the same effect as medieval European cathedrals or mosques had on their constituents – they provided the common man with a belief that there was an institution larger than themselves they could have faith in. We’ve never seen this idea epitomized so clearly as in some of these photos, the sense of solidity and scale relative to our wee man Bruno is completely intoxicating. – Adam Farmerie, AvroKO

Cold Weather Portraits
Whether we stayed indoors, or ventured outside, this winter in New York yielded my clients and I some gorgeous natural-light portraits. The relaxed winter months are a perfect time for a shooting the cozy close-ups that parents love. Here are a few of my favorites from the season.
Holiday Cheer
Every year, I have the good fortune of helping families to spread holiday cheer by crafting portraits for their holiday cards. Below are a few of my favorites from 2010.
This triptych was a small tri-fold, and I thought the colors were so cheery! I also loved photographing Barney the dog.
You Don’t Cut Your Own Bangs – Why Shoot Your Own Holiday Portrait?
When my sister was about seven, my mom decided to trim her bangs for her. But my sister couldn’t hold still, and kept drooping her head further and further down, until… When she lifted her face, she had a spiky, fuzzy buzz cut framing her forehead!
I told this story to my hairstylist, Eric Carter, the last time I was in his chair, getting my own bangs trimmed. I was laughing hysterically in the telling, as big sisters do at a sibling’s hilarious misfortune. But Eric was not amused! In fact, he was cringing, and visibly uncomfortable, and saying, “People shouldn’t cut their own hair,” as he carefully attended to mine with obvious skill and practice. That’s when it dawned on me that I feel the same way when people talk about using their point-and-shoot vacation snapshots on their holiday cards.

Birth Annoucement Photography
Many of my clients ask me to come to their homes and photograph their babies when they are just weeks old, so that they can create a birth announcement featuring authentic images from the baby’s first photo session. I wanted to share this particularly gorgeous design one of my clients found on Tiny Prints.
She used four different shots from my session with her, her first daughter, and the baby, to create this lovely arrangement.
Shooting with Sarah: Film v. Digital
For years, I apprenticed with photographers who shot on film, and glanced awestruck at the forever classic imagery in vintage copies of Life magazine, or of French street photographers like Henri Cartier-Bresson. By the time I finished college, one of my mentors was shooting half on film, half on digital. Five years later, the entire photo industry had “gone digital.”
There are lots of reasons for this rapid change, many of which are echoed in stories of any and all other types of technology from iPhones to facebook. And, digital photography, like digital anything, does present certain advantages – so many that I needn’t recount them here, but suffice it to say, that I bet you can hardly think of anyone under the age of 45 who doesn’t have a digital camera of some kind.
