Playing a game is a great way to set the tone for children, especially while we’re also trying to get a baby’s attention.
Nine months is the absolute best age for a baby portrait – so many smiles! From about 8-10 months, babies start to engage a lot more, but conveniently, it’s before they’re walking so they’re not able to run out of the photo session. It’s a great time for close-up portrait and capturing your baby in your favorite spot, as well.
What a glorious day we had in Paris for this family session! Working with toddlers is always interesting – it’s better to engage them in play than try to get them what you want them to do. All the more reason to select an incredible location so that wherever they roam, you’ll have great backdrops.
By definition, “headshots” are entirely about your face, and the most important thing about a social media profile picture is your expression. That said, it can be fun to experiment with showing a hint of the background, or even having an environmental portrait in the mix for any press opportunities that arise. Here are some samples as inspiration for a publicity session.
If you’re a brave enough parent to sign the waiver at the entrance, Berkeley’s Adventure Playground puts giant smiles on courageous kids’ faces. They get to explore all kinds of ramshackle structures, roll in tubes, and ride the zip line. Incredible photo opps abound.

After I broke free from the enchantment of Ann Arbor, Michigan, shortly after graduating with a BA in film from the University of Michigan, I soon found myself under the spell of New York City. The sense of “place,” has always had a big impact on me – not just in terms of a location and its architecture and infrastructure – but perhaps even more in terms of its people and what feels like common thoughts bouncing around in the air.
It’s so fun to find colorful and unusual backdrops for a family session because then we can really concentrate on candid moments in the space. Even the shiest little ones come out of their shell when we take the focus off photography and enjoy where we are.
Sometimes when you’re counting on fog, San Francisco surprises you with sunshine. Still, we made the most of the light for this family session at the beach, and the girls found dandelions all over Crissy Field.
