What a delight to discover that this big sister was the perfect hand-holding height to help her baby sister who was learning to walk. We took advantage of it throughout the photo session, as the sun went down in London. We even got Mum and Dad to hop in for a few. Gunnersbury Park made a gorgeous background with its two mansions and path of ruins. Ideal for two sisters to explore!
What a glorious day we had in Paris for this family session! Working with toddlers is always interesting – it’s better to engage them in play than try to get them what you want them to do. All the more reason to select an incredible location so that wherever they roam, you’ll have great backdrops.
If you’re a brave enough parent to sign the waiver at the entrance, Berkeley’s Adventure Playground puts giant smiles on courageous kids’ faces. They get to explore all kinds of ramshackle structures, roll in tubes, and ride the zip line. Incredible photo opps abound.
It’s so fun to find colorful and unusual backdrops for a family session because then we can really concentrate on candid moments in the space. Even the shiest little ones come out of their shell when we take the focus off photography and enjoy where we are.
Sometimes when you’re counting on fog, San Francisco surprises you with sunshine. Still, we made the most of the light for this family session at the beach, and the girls found dandelions all over Crissy Field.

I love Christmas. One of my favorite things in the world is sitting in front of the Christmas tree with a holiday-scented candle burning (Nest makes my favorite), sipping mulled wine, cider, or hot chocolate (L.A. Burdick makes my favorite), and signing cards to all the people I love and appreciate.
Something special happens when you travel. Many things seem different from the place you left, and yet some things seem universal, too.
When I tell people I’m a photographer, the first question they ask is what my specialty is. I say, “Kids!” They either say, “Aw, how sweet!” or they say, “Whoa, that’s hard.”
Rebecca, from Kids Can Groove, features all the best kindie music with a thoughtful approach. If you read her blog, you will love how inspired she gets by the music, and find there is an entire universe of great music for kids that parents won’t loathe.
Admittedly, the first time I went to Fisherman’s Wharf was when I was seeking an In-n-Out burger. I had heard of the place, but the New Yorker in me assumed it would have something in common with Times Square — mostly a tourist attraction, possibly annoying to navigate, etc. In other words, something you endure to see a Broadway show, or obtain fries and a vanilla shake, as the case may be.
