One thing I’ve learned over the years is that kids have an opinion and a personality from day 1. Even little babies like this one seem to convey their sense of things in their attitude and in their expressions.
A simple color palette of blues and greys worked beautifully to show off these kids’ skin tones. The glasses and vibrant hair bow drew attention to their faces, too.
What’s my recipe for a successful family photo shoot? Hope for good weather, find a location that suits the family, and leave space for that je-ne-sais-quoi to swoop in and complete the magic.
Trying to keep up with kids on the playground is tricky. Moving swings are hard to focus on! Plus does that rubberized ground give them super-speed running power or what? Still, a gorgeous playground can be a great backdrop for a photo session because the kids will really immerse in play, and forget there’s a camera at all.
San Francisco’s Noe Valley children’s theater, The Rabbit Hole, invited me to capture “Time Travel Camp.” The kids rehearsed, prepared backdrops, got their faces painted, had a lunch break outside, and got ready for the show. A mom-and-baby mini session is a pretty precious Mother’s Day idea, in case you’re wondering how to spend the day. Here’s some inspiration from Kite Hill – a tiny little park tucked into Noe Valley overlooking downtown San Francisco. I like finding spots not everyone has seen for especially unique photography. Even locals don’t know about this hidden spot!
Brooklyn Bridge Park is constantly new. The grounds frequently feature art installations, the open sky show is always on display between the Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridges.
Siblings in NY! With matching shoes! I’ve been photographing these two sisters since the younger one was 6 months old. Now instead of baby talk, we share a love of Star Wars. Fascinating how photography creates markers in time. It seems like I get to “fast-forward” between markers when I see clients once or twice a year – I experience compressed versions of kids’ lives and they seem to grow up in a matter of days.
Believe it or not, there are a few streets in Manhattan where hardly any cars go, and we can take family photos right in the middle of the road. Having grown up in the city of Cleveland, cities have always reminded me of my childhood – flowers sprouting through cracks in the sidewalk, the gentle incessant hum, cities are full of wonder and possibilities – just like childhood itself.
