I get lost in my mind sometimes. I don’t mean I get confused. I mean, I get lost in it — as in, “She got lost in his eyes.” I have often said I can never get bored, because my own mind seems to be an endless source of amusement for me.

Is a Bridge an Icon?
“The Golden Gate Bridge is my hero,” I thought to myself. “Wait, what does that even mean?”
It’s a symphonic display of design and engineering, but it’s just metal and construction materials, whereas “hero,” is a word that personifies.
New York to Napa – The Beauty of Connections
One of the cool things about having lived in NYC for 10 years was the level of talent and super charming people I got to interact with. People I met there have moved on, like myself. And, now we reconnect quite easily. It’s like the blood of NYC that once coursed through our veins is present, and through it, we’re connected.

Welcome to Gattaca
In 1998, Andrew Niccols’ film Gattaca (from the year prior) screened in my college-required biology class, and my life was never the same.
That’s only a slight a exaggeration. Science fiction inspires me because its stories are based on things that scientists are actually exploring in the present, making it totally conceivable that the suspension of disbelief is a logical endeavor.
Alighted in Napa
Light. If I had to sum up my experience in California in one word, I’d say, “light.”
KIDS IN SPACE: Documenting the Child’s Perspective of Architectural Design
No. 4 – Salk Institute, San Diego
For this installment of Kids in Space, I asked my architect friend and colleague Julie Gabrielli to comment on the photos. I was so intrigued by what she wrote, I decided to include it in its entirety here.

Interview by SoCal Kids San Diego
The brilliant writer Kathie Zaccaria of SoCal Kids San Diego interviewed me about my creative practice and approach to photographing kids, as a corollary to my trip to California last month. It’s included here in its entirety, and you can also view it in its original form on the SoCal Kids website.
What kind of camera do you use?
I use all kinds of cameras. I own both Nikon and Canon digital cameras, and actually still prefer to shoot film, when I can. For that I have a Nikon SLR, and a Voigtlander rangefinder that I love — as well as all kinds of other random ones. I love the look of film, and the artistry involved when you can’t “check on” the pictures to see how they’re shaking out. I find it’s an exercise in being present, and the images end up reflecting something ethereal.
Pasadena Field Trip
My friends Jerilyn and Peter got married this year, on the 4th of July, and I was fortunate enough to be their pre- and post- wedding event photographer (I got to attend the wedding as a guest!). It had been four years since I was last in California, to shoot the wedding of my brilliant graphic designers, Tracey and Nat Bolton (who did www.sarahsloboda.com). Previously, I had spent a great deal of time there, in my short-lived career in television, whilst helping to produce the 2005 People’s Choice Awards. It was interesting to reflect on that time of my life, as I saw some familiar sights, and some new ones. All in all, I was so happy to be back in California!
Tee Shirt Design #1
One of the many other artistic interests I have recently begun to pursue is graphic design. I was advised by my amazing designer friend Rob to take a really good typography class as a foundation. In the spirit of exploring typography, I started designing tee shirt slogans with fonts I already have in my computer.
I have found that, as with any software program, it really is important to learn how to use all of the various tools in Illustrator. My Illustrator-savviness is far from advanced, but I was able to concoct what I think is a pretty appropriate design for my original slogan about contemporary real estates trends: “California is the new Brooklyn.” (c) 2008 Sarah Sloboda
Soon, I hope to have the design available for purchase on zazzle.com, but in the meantime I made a custom version for my friend Jen who is moving to Nashville from Williamsburg – in her case, Nashville is the new Brooklyn.
