For the past several years, I’ve made a tradition of going on tour to capture family photos in some of my favorite cities. This year, I made stops in Cleveland, New York, and Los Angeles.
You might recall, I’m pretty into ceramics. I like the feeling of something tangible in our super digital world. This past spring, I paid a visit to Billy Ritter’s ceramic studio in Cleveland for a little experiment. I love wall mural family portraits. In 2017, I photographed lots of families in front of lots of different walls and street art installations, literally coast to coast. A bunch of these were shot in Cleveland, a couple in New York. And several were captured along the West Coast from Long Beach to San Francisco to Seattle.
Occasionally, I have the opportunity to photograph an extended family, including the grandparents. It’s a remarkably tricky thing these days with so many families with members scattered across the miles.

I think this year has been the most proud I’ve been of my hometown in recent history. Cleveland won a basketball championship, and opened this renovation of Public Square that has brought a new vibrance to downtown.
Had a couple of friendly photo bombers pop into this shot before we started on these sisters’ summery photo session. I love the look of these vibrant patterns together – a bold move wardrobe-wise, but it totally works.
